We put a plan together yesterday for our Food Stamp Challenge week… It includes 4 main meals that will be dinners and lunches, breakfast for the work week, and weekend breakfasts. We spent $36.64, saving the extra money for $.50 PBR happy hours and potentially a snack at Bumbershoot this weekend.

Here’s todays menu:

Breakfast: Honeycomb cereal and milk (I’ll be having this all week!!)
Lunch: Ramen (We didn’t have any left overs from dinner, since we started today. So Ramen it was!)
Dinner: Oven Chow Mein (I chose to do this instead of the slated Mac & Cheese because it has some meat in it.)

Some findings so far:

  • Buy in bulk! We were in line at the check out counter when we decided to check out the bulk aisle for some nuts (too expensive!). We found rice in bulk though and saved $.50 (or one happy hour beer at the Metropolitain Cafe).
  • Buy fruit/veggies that give you the most bang for the buck. You can eat almost an entire carrot, whereas you can’t eat the entire ear of corn.
  • Saving $.10 here and there adds up… I was almost giddy finding the cheapest item available last night. (A change from what I typically do… wonder through the store, grabbing things aimlessly. It felt good to have a plan and come under budget!)
